“I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” – Albert Einstein

Welcome to PJJDS

Nestled in the wooded Glen in Cape Towns Camps Bay, the Phyllis Jowell Jewish Day School is a state-of-the-art educational institution which caters for children from age 18 months (playschool) to Grade 6. This unique school bends a solid curriculum with religious education, values and practise.

In just a few short years, the student body has grown to accommodate more than 100 children at our beautiful campus with bespoke educational facilities.

The students represent a broad spectrum of the local Jewish community, ranging from Rabbinical families to secular Jews of various Orthodox Jewish affiliations. This has created a unique environment where tolerance, understanding and respect has developed amongst the students from an early age.

Our Philosophy & Motto

The Phyllis Jowell School uses innovative techniques and systems to create learning that is tailor-made for each student. The individual development of young learners is a priority and teachers are prepared to adjust the educational experience to the needs of each student. The overreaching goal is to synthesise the development of body, mind and soul. This is reflective of our logo : a picture of a Torah, open for all to see, reflecting our aim of educating our children to apply the fundamental and timeless laws, lessons and values of our Torah to their lives in a dynamic and modern world. This vision is also beautifully encapsuled in our motto of “Torah im derech eretz” – (“Torah with the way of the World”).

The Phyllis Jowell curicullum provides a solid academic grounding through a comprehensive secular education programme supported by an in-depth religious education. The secular education follows all the guidelines and requirements of the Western Cape Education Department. Our religious and secular curricula are well integrated and are designed to compliment one another. The analytical techniques used by the Torah scholars over the ages, which encourage technical analysis and critical thinking are taught as disciplines across all the studies from an early age. Key to these objectives is the nurturing and supportive relationships between teachers, learners and parents. We believe that in addition to academic achievement, that is self-esteem is vital to each childs’ growth, and that a teacher’s attitude towards each child is crucial, setting the tone for attitudes too.

The school caters for regular interaction and feedback between teachers and parents. The school encourages parents to visit the school, participate in events and attend various monthly and holiday celebrations showcasing the childrens progress and growth.

This extends to monthly “birthday assemblies” where children are encouraged to showcase special talents through solo performances, to group concerts and other school events occurring throughout the school year.

Our Uniqueness

PJJDS is a school that seeks to develop the total child. Children receive a high level of individual attention, and therefore greater opportunity to express and develop themselves as individuals.

The school is named after a very special “aishet chayil” – (“woman of valor). Phyllis Jowell (1936 – 2006) was born and raised in Cape Town. During her life she contributed to numerous initiatives and was an ardent supporter of Torah, continuity of Jewish heritage and community affairs. The essence of her life was what she selflessly did for others, and the Phyllis Jowell School seeks to imbue its learners with those very same values. While we place great emphasis on academic excellence and the development of knowledge for the scholarly age sector, it is our concentration of the underlying midot – essential character traits – that sets us apart.

We expect the faculty and students to conduct themselves in a way that exemplifies the true spirit of the school community, including :

  • Respect for individuals feelings
  • Sense of dignity
